It's my birthday!

I'm officially 18...a legal adult, they say...I prefer "illegal kid."

It's so weird to think about. I'm still in elementary school, I still mismatch my socks on purpose, I am still scared of ordering in restaurants by myself. (well, I could still see myself with the sock thing.) No, I'm not in college choosing my own classes, cramming for tests, rethinking my relationship with God and others for myself as God opens my eyes to all the possibilities that lie before me, helps me begin to realize just how much He loves me and those around me. No, I'm not at my dad's alma mater, where the colors are navy and ORANGE. Hideous. No, I'm not a music major. I said I would never major in music, remember? No, I'm not thinking about majoring in English too. I hate writing, you should know this. No, I did not just wear hot pink and red striped knee socks to class...yes I did. I am.

I can vote now! Oh wait. Elections were last week. haha

I am so incredibly blessed beyond measure. God is ridiculously good. I have amazing, sneaky friends at school. I seriously just got THREE surprise cakes/gatherings of people in like two hours...
First, I'm at Lynn and Joyce's apartment for 1st years Bible study. All I do is leave to go to the bathroom; when I come back, all the lights are off. Are those...candles? Why...cake...me?! Surprise #1.
#2 - I'm getting ready to leave Bible study when my dear roommate calls me. "Um...when are you getting back? I left my keys in Lauren's room and she's not here." sigh. I'll be there soon, I say. She calls me again a few minutes later. "Where are you?" Coming, Mina! Off to rescue my roommate, I unlock the door...it gets stuck. Always does. Mina has a weird look on her face...SURPRISE! Oh. My. Goodness. Half the hall is in my room, singing Happy Birthday. Balloons are everywhere. I can't stop grinning. More cake? Ice cream? I'm spoiled, I am. What an amazing hall I live on. So that's why everyone kept asking me my schedule this week. Mina knows me too well, she gives me a book on classical music.
People start to leave my room. I start putting away all the FOOD everywhere (Selami would be so proud of us), amazed at how my hallmates pulled this wonderful shock of my life off, when my phone rings. Oops. Missed it. Where is my phone?  Probably Mom...oh it's...David from CCF? Oh yeah, I left my Bible at Joyce's...maybe I'll see him tomorrow and get it then."Your Bible is crucial to life, Christine. You need it now and I've been assigned to bring it to you." Wow. Such dedicated Christian friends that push me to spiritual commitment. Or so I think. "Um..can you meet me outside your dorm so I can give it to you?" I trek down the stairs, open the basement door, and see...not just David. The CCF clan, too, with a carrot cake. And...Doritos! And...oh, they actually did bring me my Bible. What? More cake? Carrots in it, it's okay. Fobby pictures ensue. Happiness.

Just wow. I can't believe where I am...the people I'm with...the things I'm learning...the stuff I get to experience (concerts and classes and random deep conversations, not just lots of cake). When you're in God's will...it's amazing. I really wouldn't trade this for anything else.

It's 1 AM. Typical college student I have become...

I'm at UVA.
Life is so random and I just had to write it somewhere. :)
Stop making me laugh! The Jupiterian antelopes are stealing the pop-tarts and therefore creating dissonant intervals!!!
Ahhh. I love college. :)
God is so good.

...Christmas...and a Happy New Year!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!!! "For unto us a child is born..."

Can y'all believe this year is almost over?! I'm getting old. Bah.

1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Went to China! Taught choric speaking (ummm yeah wow.) Played for Jeanne Baxtresser, the most amazing flutist ever. Flew-as in airplane-by myself. Played football on the beach! Stay up til midnight rapping with my roommate (ha!). Get up at 6 AM to do pushups...conduct an orchestra. Play the quad toms for marching and pep band. Teach 165 kids how to play Four Corners. Applied for college.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
What, y'all don't think I'm perfect just the way I am?

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Um. No one comes to mind, which is a surprise because our church has had a lot of births this year.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
China!

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
More discretion, for sure. Again, more discipline. More love! And...more chocolate.

7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
July 15th-August 17th. China days. Oh wow...some incredible memories from that trip. Learning, laughing, living it up on the other side of the world. Crazy moments and plenty of tearjerkin' ones too. God opened up my heart and eyes that month.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting 3rd place for my flute solo at Nationals.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not trusting God enough. And, I utterly, utterly failed to memorize Genesis 1 over the summer. *hides*

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Yes. I got sick after we got back from China (AFTER, not during the trip, lol.). And my injury is from Sam kicking me while playing soccer at youth group. I have a huge bruise from that. haha

11. What was the best thing you bought ?
Again, the award goes to a super cute pair of shoes...I'm sure there is something more profitable and less-vain-sounding, but I can't think of it right now.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My fabulous friends and family, just because they are amazing! Also major props to the choric for winning state this year!

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
I just thought of something really funny and slightly mean I could say...

14. Where did most of your money go?
Christmas presents.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Making the 11-12 District Band, Nationals, my last Raleigh Christmas Parade, Christmas, flying home after our China trip (I wasn't excited about leaving AT ALL, but I was looking forward to seeing everyone at home.).

16. What song will always remind you of 2007?

"Happy Birthday" (HA! The song they played CONSTANTLY in China!)

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. are you happier or sadder? Happier
ii. thinner or fatter? Um. Probably thinner. I'm really hungry right now...
iii. richer or poorer? Richer. Ha. Yeah right.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Practicing flute, working out, meditating/memorizing the Bible, studying (Chinese especially), looking to encourage, going to God with my problems instead of trying to work them out myself. (Exactly the same as last year...hmmm...)

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Wasting my time. Trying to be "perfect."

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent Christmas at my grandma/aunt's house. :) YAY!

21. Did you fall in love in 2006?
Oh yes. 165 kids in Beijing, China. I MISS YOU ALL!

22. This question appears to be missing from the original survey.

23. How many one-night stands?
NONE, of course. I would delete this question, but the numbers would be all...off.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
NUMB3RS, maybe?

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Yes. My cousin Ryan, because he is so incredibly, ridiculously talented.

(Kidding, kidding. I love you Ryan! He will hate me for saying that online, lol.)

26. What was the best book you read?
"Pride and Prejudice" -again. I just really like that book.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
That I actually like Bach flute pieces.OH and that it's pretty sweet being a drummer :D

28. What did you want and get?
A new tennis racket, thanks to my brothers! And a hat. I like my hat.

29. What did you want and not get?
New pink shoes. I looked all over Beijing (slight exaggeration) and couldn't find any I liked. I also wanted to ride a rickshaw in China, but that didn't happen.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
National Treasure 2!!!!!

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 17 about a month ago. My dad was home (yay) so we went out to dinner the night before and I got lots of cool presents!

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If I had beaten Philip in our last game of Egyptian Ratscrew in Beijing...
Seriously, though, less drama would've been nice. Ahhh the joys of high school.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?
Uh, I've gotten a lot bolder style-wise, so I will go ahead and wear those random/eclectic/super preppy outfits I think up. I will actually go out shopping wearing a newsboy cap, and wear striped knee socks (with Mary Janes, no less) to school. Yeah. Random. And. I like sparkly stuff, within reason.

34. What kept you sane?

GOD. Hands down.

In addition, those conversations with friends where I can take a break from intellectual endeavors and be random and stupid and still feel loved.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Um...the Chickfila Cowboy Cow. (His name is Alfonzo...see my latest album for pictures.)

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The fact that didn't televise the Cowboys-Packers game for non-cable people! Yes, political. Big deal.

37. Who did you miss?
Bethany and Susannah (my two roomies from this summer!). MY CHINA KIDS!!! Pretty much everyone associated with the China trip. Josh and Robin (who left for college).

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Bethany Rowe (roommmate at Sound Foundations) wins. She...I don't know. She is just one fun chick! She gets points for listening to my problems Plus, she is the only person I know who will get up at 6 AM to do pushups. Or have a 15-minute conversation in a British accent. <3

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007?
God doesn't ask us to be "perfect" Christians. He wants us to be genuine. I have absolutely no righteousness on my own -EVERYTHING is because of Jesus Christ. I don't have to try to "be good"on my own...no first-born, over-conscientious stressing out, trying to prove something...I can just rest in His grace. He is so amazing.

Take your SATs early. Oh my goodness do that. And..it's okay if you don't have your license. Yet.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

For all the goodbyes said this summer...and the amazing friendships that were started, continued, and enjoyed:

"You just call out my name, and you know wherever I am,
I'll come running
To see you again...
Winter, spring, summer, or fall,
All you gotta do is call
And I'll be there...

You've got a friend."

Looking forward to a brand new year full of adventures, joys, and lessons with y'all! May we "leave the broken past in His hands, and step out into the invincible future with Him." (Oswald Chambers) HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

grace and new blessings from Him, ~chrys*

Every just sat and thought about how good God is? I don't do that enough.

HE IS AMAZING.

No, no epiphanies or out of the blue miracles lately...but then again...isn't the fact that I'm here, living, breathing, walking in His love because of His grace a miracle??

Lord, You are so GOOD.

An Unsurprising Lack of Inspiration

Hello to all! Yes, every single one of you that still reads this thing. All three of you.

It is amazing. I have three essays to write this week. And, as the title says, an unsurprising lack of inspiration. I'm the kind of person that has to wait for inspiration to smack me in the face before some real writing gets done...
Ok, so not really. God has been really good and enabled me to get some outlines done today. I need prayer, guys! So many decisions to make...but it's all in God's hands right? No worries...

So. The urge came upon me to write the following, during working on college apps. Alas. My random side took over.

“If I had to describe you in one word, I’d say that you are…cool.” (The poor soul I'm quoting probably doesn't even remember saying this...)

There you have it, folks. Christine L. Meng is cool. Now, please bear in mind that the word “cool” has many meanings. The first is “socially adept”, those who know exactly what to wear, what to say, and whom to associate with to be popular. Though I am, in fact, quite cool, this definition of the word does not apply to me. I am extremely outgoing, and am willing to make friends with almost anyone I meet. But I am not socially adept. I am ornery for the fun of it; I wear something I know is not “in style” just because I like it. I enjoy getting to know the high school freshmen. Cool, but blissfully and willingly ignorant of the rules of the fashionable crowd.

The word cool can also mean “lack of interest or enthusiasm; dispassionate; unaffected by emotions.” Alas, this description does not fit me either. I am, unfortunately, much too excitable to be considered unemotional. I am enthusiastic about trivial things like donuts, and the thought of spending a day with friends thrills me. My greatest goal is to learn to love Jesus Christ, my passion, with all of my heart. I am cool –I just thoroughly enjoy things the average dispassionate person does not bat an eye at.

Yet another definition of the word “cool” is “moderately cold in regards to temperature.” Ah, here we have an accurate statement! I am always cold. I wear jackets, inside, during the summer, because I think the air conditioning is turned on too high. I cheerfully complain about my lack of warmth so often that my friends have taken to calling me “Cool Rose.” But through this, I have learned to endure hardships, including trials like my brothers’ blowing the fan in my face while I am diligently studying.

The word cool is also taken to mean “excellent, highly skilled, or clever.” I will humbly admit that I am, indeed, highly skilled in some areas. I can speed through scales on my flute in my sleep; just don’t ask me to do it while I am awake. I can sightread anything you give me on the piano: the number of notes correctly played is inversely proportional to the number of people watching me. I can calmly speak or perform in front of a crowd of five hundred people –it especially helps when they’re all hard of hearing. So, in conclusion, I epitomize the word “cool”; just not in every sense of the word.

...how's that for a xanga post? Ok I'm sure someone somewhere out there will want an update so here goes: choric speaking today. How awesome! Took my SATs two weeks ago and am taking the ACT this Saturday. I have no idea where I'm going for college. I think I'm gonna move instead. To Russia. For a little while. (lol) Bible quizzing started three weeks ago. YAY!!! We've got a great team this year. There is a sousaphone and a set of quad toms (drums...google it!) in our house right now. Yes, Justin is playing tuba and I am marching in the percussion section. Quads are SO much fun. We're doing an old cadence this year, and pretty much, it's gonna rock. (Figuratively, of course.) All-State band for Christian schools is in a few weeks. Shana and I are the top two chairs (she's definitely 1st); totally looking forward to that! And...ok. That's it. Peace out my friends!

love because of His grace, ~chrys*
